Welcome to Lateral Thinking!

My name is Bryan Knowles, and I’ve been writing about the NFL in some capacity for over 20 years — from Football Outsiders to FTN, Bleacher Report to PlaySheet, to more defunct sites than you can shake a stick at. And finally, it’s time to stretch out and get my own space. Excuse the dust while I decide on the curtains.

For those new, welcome! I write about stats, about historical trends and rankings, about playoff scenarios and unlikely outcomes, about uniforms and scheduling, and a whole mishmash of other topics. Back at Football Outsiders, we called it Scramble for the Ball. Here, we’re calling it Lateral Thinking — what better way to describe the weird combination of jokes, references, stats and history that run through my brain on a constant loop?

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy the NFL from a slightly skewed angle, then Lateral Thinking is for you. Welcome, and lets make it a good one.

Why subscribe?

Subscribers will get full access to all of my content — while I plan to still release some pieces for free, if you want the full, exclusive content, a subscription is the way to go. During the offseason, this will include my historical pieces like the Dynasty Rankings and it’s various spinoffs. During the season, we’ll focus in more on the relevant stats of the day — who has done something historically interesting or unusual, which teams are still alive in the playoffs and which are totally dead. It’s the same mix of stuff you’ve seen from me over the past two decades, now in a convenient, centralized location that probably won’t collapse underneath me. Fingers crossed. Subscribers will also get full access to the archives once there’s enough archival content to fill it out..
